Walter Moore Tigers Begin Baseball Season
SSU Softball Sweeps Fisher
The Savannah State softball team swept a pair of doubleheaders from NAIA opponent Fisher over the weekend. Krystal Frost and Rachel West each hurled one hitters as SSU shut out the visitors 8-0 and 13-0 on February 21. On Feb 22, the Lady Tigers won 8-2 and 8- 0 as Shamyra Adams went 3 for 4 and scored four runs in the opener and Frost threw a two hitter in game two while striking out eight batters. Savannah State (8-6) split a double header with Division II Claflin on Feb. 20, winning the opener 4-3 and losing the second game 4-3. Chris Linton scored 20 points to lead Savannah State to a 79-66 win over Florida Atlantic in Tiger Arena on February 18. SSU let a 25 point lead dwindle to five points with 3:40 left but held on with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. Tracy Rankins scored 17 points for SSU (13-14) while Anthony Jones added 15 and Raye Bailey chipped in 11. Arnold Louis grabbed 11 rebounds.
SSU Women Defeat Longwood
Lashara Smith scored 16 points to lead Savannah State to a 59-54 win at Longwood on February 22. Ashlee Barley added 14 points while Raven Fields scored 10 and had nine rebounds.The Lady Tigers (7-19)held on to win despite not scoring a field goal the final five minutes of the game.
