Lady Tigers Nip Talledaga
Savannah State spotted Talledaga a 11-point lead in the beginning as the Lady Tigers rallied for a 62-59 win over the NAIA opponent on January 30. Raven Fields led SSU (4-17) with 15 points and LaShara Smith added 12. SSU led by nine in the second half but the Tornadoes pulled to within one with 1:08 remaining. Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch was the difference for SSU. The win broke a eight-game losing streak for SSU. The Lady Tigers fell at Mississippi State 97-33 on Jan. 29. The Bulldogs had runs of 11-0 and 12-0 to start the game and never looked back. MSU had runs of 20-6 and 24-2 in the second half. Savannah State racked up 15 top 10 finishes in the Tennessee State Invitational in Nashville on January 31. The SSU men had eight while the women earned seven. Leading the way were Chris Blount who was third in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.47m. The men's 4x400m relay team of Tyrone McCoy, Eric Plump, Marcus Stallworth and Vernon Williams also placed third in their event with a time of 3:21.37. The SSU women were paced by Victoria Burch and Amber Hughes who both were second in their events. Burch ran in the 400m in a time of 58.23 and Hughes had a leap of 11.60m in the triple jump.Gordon Doing Well At Allen
Former Johnson High Atomsmasher Anthony Gordon is doing great things at Allen University. The sophomore guard does not start but plays a lot of minutes. 'He has great potential to be successful at this level," says Allen head coach Timard Gates. Gordon is doing very well in the classroom. The math major, who is on a full academic scholarship, says he has a 3.76 grade point average and has been on the Dean's list as well as President's list. "College life has been good," he says.
