Walter Moore Walter Moore Tigers Ready For Signing Day

After losing 12 seniors off his 2008 squad, head football coach Robby Wells and staff have been looking for new players for the 2009 campaign. Wells said that his staff is focusing on recruiting linebackers as well as offensive and defensive linemen. Wells added that 12 recruits have given SSU verbal commitments that they will sign with the university on February 4. The coaching staff expected about 15 recruits to visit on last weekend.

SSU Opens Tennis Season

Savannah State opened their 2009 tennis season with a 8-0 loss at Kennesaw State on January 25. Don Andrews has been hired as the new women's tennis coach at SSU. The Birmingham native attended Montevallo on a basketball scholarship but while playing tennis was the team's number one singles player and had a four-year record of 75-3. The former Head Pro at Hilton Head and the city of Savannah has also coached at Windsor Forest High as well as Huntingdon College and Armstrong Atlantic State. In 1977, Andrews was named the Alabama Tennis Pro of the Year and in 1991 was inducted into the Montevallo Sports Hall of Fame.

Tigers Down SC State

Tracy Rankins scored 19 points to help Savannah State defeat South Carolina State 57-53 at Tiger Arena on January 14. Anthony Jones and Jovonni Shuler added 11 points apiece for SSU despite the Bulldogs shooting 47.8 percent from the floor. The Tigers lost at Jacksonville 69- 56 on Jan. 20. The Dolphins broke open a close game with a 11-2 run in the second half. Rashad Hassan led the Tigers with 19 points while Chris Linton added 10. In a 55-39 loss at Utah Valley State on Jan. 24, the Wolverines used a 15-2 run in the second period to put SSU (9-11) away. Jones had eight points and eight rebounds for the Tigers. Raye Bailey and Hassan also scored eight points each.

SSU Women Fall To 3-16

Savannah State's tough season continued last week with losses to College of Charleston and at North Carolina Central. In the 61-54 loss to College of Charleston on January 21 at Tiger Arena, SSU fell behind by 12 before rallying in the second half to take a four point lead. A 21-5 run by the Cougars was too much for SSU to handle. Milan Johnson led SSU with 14 points while Lashara Smith scored 10. NCCU defeated Savannah State 52- 40 on Jan. 24. SSU only scored eight points in the first half.
