"Inaugural 'Those Singing Pastors' Huge Success"
Rev. Willie Rice of Macedonia Baptist accepts the trophy for most supportive congregation. The West Broad Street YMCA held its inaugural "Those Singing Pastors" event on Sunday, November 30. A light-hearted singing competition among area pastors served as a fund raising event for the Y. Over $3,000 was raised.
"It was our first year doing this and the response has been tremendous," says Rev. Thurmond Tillman, pastor of First African Baptist in Savannah and Chair of the Board of Directors of the West Broad Street YMCA. "Everyone has had a wonderful time. We are so appreciative of the support of these pastors and the community."
Brother E. Larry McDuffie served as the master of ceremonies for the event. "What a wonderful night! Let us all rejoice as we praise our Lord and the work of the West Broad Street Y," McDuffie said during the program. McDuffie led the over 150 people in attendance through the entire evening which included wonderful songs by Shekinah of First Mt. Sinai Baptist Church featuring a rousing set of songs by its pastor, Rev. Shannon O'Neil Smith, Sr.
Despite the rain and cold, the event was well attended, filling the gymnasium with over 150 joyous participants. "Let's do this every year" was frequently heard from the audience. Along with the music, there were refreshments including hot dogs and full barbeque. It was a great family atmosphere that brought the community together and helped raise money for programs at the West Broad Street YMCA.
By the end of the evening, Rev. Wilson Scott of Bethlehem Baptist had received a plaque for having helped raise the most money for the Y through his congregation; Mt. Sinai Baptist received one for most in attendance, and Rev. Clarence Williams of First Tabernacle Baptist received a plaque for best singing. A trophy for best overall support was presented to Rev. Willie Rice of Macedonia Baptist for their support.
