SCCPSS and AASU to Host the 2nd Annual District-Wide Future Educators Association Fall Rally
Alderman Van Johnson On Wednesday, November 19, 2008, Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and Armstrong Atlantic State University will host the 2nd Annual District-Wide Future Educators Association Fall Rally. Student members of the Future Educators Association (FEA) from local public high school and middle school chapters will assemble at the Armstrong Atlantic State University Conference Center at 9:30 a.m. to participate in workshops and seminars relating to educational careers, as well as tour the college campus.
Guest speakers include Alderman Van Johnson, who will motivate and inspire the students, and Savannah- Chatham Public School Board Attorney Lester Johnson, who will discuss school law.
Also featured at this year's Fall Rally, FEA brings to Savannah the award-winning Teen Trendsetters Reading Mentors program. Seven local high school FEA members have been named among Georgia's first Teen Trendsetters and were recently trained in Orlando to kickoff a mentor program designed to get its members active in helping others in local schools. These seven students will conduct a workshop to train others to become Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentors. They will then be paired with local third graders struggling with reading, for one-on-one weekly sessions. The goals for these FEA Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentors is to improve the basic reading skills of the younger students, to nurture the volunteer spirit of the FEA organization, and to provide educational experiences for its members.
Attorney Lester Johnson FEA efforts are complimented by Savannah State University, Savannah Technical College, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), Savannah Federation of Teachers (SFT), Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) and Chatham Association of Educators (CAE).
