Applauding Mercer's southern gumption, timeless appeal, Gatsby style, creative inspiration, "Huckleberry Friend" affability, songwriting, and singing, Mercer's home city of Savannah, Georgia, dedicates a full year in 2009 to the Johnny Mercer Centennial, spotlighting the accomplishments and influence of its legendary son. The celebration begins November 16, 2008.
Johnny Mercer Honoring Johnny Mercer's 100th birthday Savannah spotlights the boyishly talented Johnny Mercer as their 'man of the year' during yearlong events in 2009. Out to prove it is the city who loves Mercer best, lifelong Savannahians and newcomers are busy weaving the spirit and influence of Johnny Mercer into art and music, entertainment, education and history.
City of Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson's Johnny Mercer Centennial Committee chaired by Dianne S. Thurman is plan- ning events throughout 2009 in Savannah. "We want to thank Johnny Mercer for introducing Savannah to the world, in his own unique way," shares Dianne Thurman, chair of the Johnny Mercer Centennial (2009). "At the same time, we want to introduce new generations to this endearing man. He changed so many lives for the better."
Launching the yearlong celebration is the Johnny Mercer Tribute Concert on November 16, 2008, taking place in the Johnny Mercer Theater of the Savannah Civic Center. The City of Savannah and Friends of Johnny Mercer, Inc., sponsor the free concert. The highlight of the centennial year will take place on Mercer's birthday, November 18, 2009, with the unveiling of a life size bronze statue by sculptor Susie Chisholm. The location for Johnny Mercer's statue will be announced later.
Drawing often from his Savannah upbringing, the storytelling Mercer spun poetic short tales that turned up to enliven Hollywood films and New York Broadway plays. "What better time than 2009 and place, Savannah, to spotlight this legendary achiever and his optimistic, creative influence," Thurman states.
