Walter Moore Walter Moore MVSU Rallies Past Savannah State

Paul Roberts accounted for three touchdowns including the game-winner with four seconds left as Mississippi Valley State defeated Savannah State 22-20 before a homecoming crowd of 7,654. SSU trailed 16-13 in the fourth but Kurvin Curry threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Deleon Hollinger with 36 seconds left for a 20- 16 advantage. MVSU marched 58 yards in seven plays for the game-winning drive. The Tigers (3-5) led 3- 0 on a Derek Williams field goal but MVSU answered with a touchdown and field goal to go ahead 9-3 at the end of one quarter. SSU scored 10 unanswered points in the second quarter as Rashard Russell scored on a eight-yard run and Williams kicked a 23 yard FG for a 13- 9 halftime lead. Roberts scored a on a one-yard run in the fourth to give the Delta Devils (2-4) a 16-13 lead. Curry led SSU with 173 passing yards and 79 rushing yards. Chris Bush caught six passes for 50 yards and Calvin Leonard had 13 tackles. SSU will play Concordia for Homecoming on November 1.

Unbeaten

Tuskegee broke open a tie game with two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter in a 33-20 win over Albany State before 9,143 fans. The Rams trailed 20-7 in the third but a quarterback Kisan Flakes ran for one score and threw for another to tie the game at 20 with 7:01 left in the contest. Tuskegee's John Pascley ran for one score and Michael Henry recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:49 left. The teams combined for 25 penalties for 237 yards. Flakes led ASU (5-2) with 119 rushing yards and 100 passing yards. Jesup's Mario Fuller had 10 tackles. Tuskegee (7-0) got 131 passing yards and two touchdowns from Jacorey Atkinson. Jason English caught four passes for 103 yards and a score.

FAMU Stops Southern

Florida A&M out-lasted Southern 52-49 in a game that featured six lead changes before a crowd of 15,107 fans. The Rattlers (5-2) had 472 yards of offense but also had 143 yards in penalties. Southern rolled up 523 yards of offense. FAMU led by ten at the half but the Jaguars battled back to take a 35-31 lead with under five minutes left in the third. A 66-yard punt return for a touchdown by Leroy Vann gave FAMU a 38-35 lead with 1:47 left in the third. The Rattlers advantage increased to 52-42 midway in the fourth before Southern scored a touchdown with 6:38 left. Curtis Pulley led FAMU with 172 passing yards and 118 rushing yards. Bryant Lee passed fore 407 yards and three touchdowns for Southern (4-3).

CIAA Votes To Admit Chowan

The CIAA Board of Directors has voted to admit Chowan University as a full conference member effective July 1, 2009. The Board will continue to evaluate the admission of Lincoln (PA) University for conference inclusion during the Spring Board proceedings in May. If the evaluation of Lincoln is successful, the league will resume play with twelve teams for the 2009 season in all sports.

Chowan is a Christian educational institution founded in Northeastern North Carolina in 1848 by Baptist families and named to honor the Native American Algonquin Chowanook tribe. Chowan initially joined the conference to participate in football only for the 2008 Football season.
