Chatham Retired Educators Association
President Hugh Golson hosted a fabulous Reception and Tea on the evening of August 4, 2008. This tea was to invite new and returning Retired Educators. There was a total of 26 in attendance. The atmosphere was astounding. Some new retirees join and paid their local dues as well. Mr. Golson was a gracious host. The repast was a beautiful spread and very delicious. It was the ideal evening for such an outing.
This 2008-2009 year has started out with a big BING! We celebrated Patriot's Day with the singing of patriotic songs. Mr. Golson is showing a great deal of enthusiasm toward this organization. New members were introduced namely; Mrs. Melba Priestly, Mrs. Greer Reese and Mrs. Barbara Magwood. Mrs. Shirley Spears awarded certificates to some leaders who worked with her last year while she was in office. Reports were in order; AMBA greeted by Mr. Robert DeWester emphasized the need for new members and all their benefits.
Local Membership - The incomplete report of 114 is on the roll but our goal is 300. State Membership - The names of those who have not paid their dues will be eradiated. As of this month 450 have paid. Two plans were stressed, the Life and the Automatic Deduction.
In-Touch- Mrs. Ruth Diase is a recuperating at home. Neorology - The following retirees deceased between May 2 and August 30; Mrs. Ruth Smith, Mrs. Pamela Steverson, Mrs. Eloise Castain, Mrs. Zena Carter, Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Linda Thompson, Mrs. Eldora Marks, Dr. Benjamin Lewis, Mr. Jack Deal and Mrs. Sadie Drawdy.
Legislature- Mr. Tom Edwards gave up this position.
Scrapbook- This committee is seeking 3 new members along with pictures and articles for this book.
Scholarship- One hundred dollars were allotted to purchase door prizes. Some of the members purchased also.
Public Relations Committee- Information in sent monthly to the various media about this organization.
Old Business- It was amended that we keep the officers the same length of years they have served in the past.
The guest speaker was one our our very own, Dr. Phillip Cooper. He has written a book entitled Why Afro-Americans Children Cannot Read. He expressed the dangers of labeling children (At Risk). His moto is "If the Future is To Be Different, Then the Present Must Be Disturbed. He promised to share with with us again.
