USMC Veterans Celebrate 67th Reunion
The 7th Marine Reserve Officers Class will be in Savannah from September 21-25. All 307 members of this class fought on important Japanese islands in the South Pacific from 1942-1946.
The Marines were the first U.S. force to land on a major Japanese island, Guadalcanal. Their victory there was acknowledged to be the turning point in our war in the Pacific. 18 members of the 7th lost their lives on this and other islands in the South Pacific
Their final Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel Of Fallen Eagles at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler at 2:00 p.m., September 22nd.
They will honor all Savannah Marines who gave their lives in WWII, Korea and Vietnam by laying a wreath at their monument in Forsyth Park. This will take place at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23rd.
The Savannah Jazz Festival culminates with a final-day "Youth Jazz Festival" to wrap up nine days worth of festivities, and none other than McDonald's C.H.O. (Chief Happiness Officer) Ronald McDonald. Ronald will be on hand Sunday, September 28, to entertain and help close out the event. The Youth Jazz Festival is FREE to the pub- lic-thanks in large part to the generosity of the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs, and will include giveaways, music by the Savannah Arts Academy Skyelite Jazz Band & the Coastal Jazz All Stars and an appearance by Ronald McDonald - all in a lovely outdoor setting that's great for the whole family!
At 3pm, there will be a Paper Plane Making Contest, Sponsored by the Women in Aviation International's Southern Wings Chapter.
The weeklong Savannah Jazz Festival, one of the largest and most popular of the Savannah festivals, is presented by the Coastal Jazz Association and is dedicated to the growth of jazz and jazz audiences in the Coastal Empire. The Youth Jazz Festival is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a fun, relaxing afternoon with great jazz music and fun in beautiful Forsythe Park.
