AASU's HOLA Hosts Latino Heritage Week Sept. 29 - Oct. 3

A celebration of diversity and Latin culture is coming to the Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) campus Sept. 29 - Oct. 3, when AASU's Hispanic Outreach & Leadership (HOLA) program hosts Latino Heritage Week.

This year's highlights include a performance by of one Miami's (FL) premier dance companies, the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2 in the Armstrong Center Ballroom. Also of note are a screening of "Bombón, El Perro," a film by acclaimed Argentinean film producer Carlos Sorin and a Latin-delicious breakfast on Friday, October 3 to close out the festivities.

All the events are free and take place on the AASU campus. The community is warmly invited.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Monday, September 29, Alumni Panel Discusses Latino Success Stories, Noon, University Hall 165; and Latin Dance Lessons, 10 p.m. Shearouse Plaza. All are invited to go foot loose and learn some impressive moves in different style of Latin music, including among others, Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata.

Tuesday, September 30, 7 p.m., University Hall 156 Screening of "Bombón, El Perro," a film by Argentinean Carlos Sorin. The film takes viewers to Argentina's Patagonia region, where a mechanic who's down on his luck and dreaming of a different life starts to think big after his adopted dog wins first prize at a local dog show. A not-to-be-missed film! Refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, October 1, 11:45 a.m.- 1:15 p.m., Shearouse Plaza, Fiesta Day! It's time to party to the upbeat rhythms of D.J. Pikachu. Craft workshops, and free food samples prepared by AASU Latino students will delight the senses. Tropical juices will be served by Mi Juguito. Cricket sponsors the refreshments; and 10 p.m., Shearouse Plaza, Latin Dance Lessons. The last chance to go foot loose and pick up some tips on several very popular Latin American dance styles.

Thursday, October 2, 7:30 p.m., Armstrong Center Ballroom, Hispanic Flamenco Ballet, one Miami's premier dance companies, presents the "Latin American Roots" dance show.

Friday, October 3, 8-10 a.m., Memorial College Center Lobby, Breakfast with Melo! Enjoy a free breakfast courtesy of Melody Rodriguez, director of HOLA. Savor a traditional serving of steamy Mexican cocoa, coupled with a delightful array of pastries, breads, and other mouthwatering breakfast goodies from Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, and Colombia.
