Former SSU Assistant Dies
Former Savannah State football assistant George James has passed away. James was the Tigers defensive coordinator during the 1992 season when SSU made the Division II playoffs. James, 74, was the head coach at Alabama State from 1976-82 and at Kentucky State from 1990-91. James graduated from Alabama State in 1956.Tigers Begin Fall Baseball Workouts
The Savannah State baseball team began its preparation for the upcoming season on September 8 with the traditional fall practice of new and returning players at Tiger Field. The Tigers will practice for 45 days until mid-October. Carlton Hardy will begin his fourth season as head coach at SSU and will be looking to improve on last season's 20- 25 record. It was the first losing record for Hardy since he has been at SSU and the first losing record for the program since 1996. Hardy signed 13 players during the off-season.SSU Finishes Second In Golf Tourney
The Savannah State men's golf team opened their 2008 fall season with a second-place finish in the Alabama State Fall Classic. Jamie Montgomery led SSU with a 147 followed by Riley Baxter and Corey Brown who shot a 148. Brennan Davis shot 150 for the Tigers. The SSU women finished placed fifth and were led by Vanetta Epps' 196 and Lauren Daniels' 212.Ford Leads Bulldogs Past
Bethune William Ford rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries to lead South Carolina State in a 28-19 victory against Bethune- Cookman on Sept. 13 in the Low country Classic III in Charleston before 12,495 fans. Quarterback Malcolm Long added 211 passing yards on 16 of 24 attempts, including a touchdown and an interception, for the Bulldogs (2-1) in the win. Matt Johnson was 11 of 15 passing for 122 yards and two scores for the Wildcats (1-1). SCSU out gained Bethune 486-197.Morehouse Rallies Past Lane
Savannah native James Steadman caught three touchdown passes to help Morehouse (2-1) defeat Lane 28-24 before 5,123 at B. T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta. Steadman ended the night with eight receptions for 88 yards. He had touchdown catches of 2, 8 and 35 yards. Lane jumped out to a 9-0 lead but Morehouse rallied back with two touchdowns and led 14-9 at the half.
