Regional Science Fair Coming Feb. 24 -26
The Savannah- Ogeechee Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SORSEF) will be held February 24-26 in the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn Street in Savannah.
For the past five years, Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) has facilitated the regional science fair, which is open to students in grades 6-12 in Chatham, Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Long, Screven, Tattnall, and Toombs counties.
For the first time this year, Georgia Institute of Technology-Savannah Campus will collaborate with AASU to produce and host the fair. Participating schools must register no later than October 15. The registration fee is $12.
More than 225 children from 35 private and public schools are expected to participate. They will compete in junior and senior divisions and several project categories, including engineering, environmental science, and chemistry.
The fair provides a forum for teachers and aca- demics to encourage students to investigate science and engineering problems and ways to solve them. Through their projects, students learn organizational and logistical approaches to solving complex problems.
The top winners will go on to compete at the 2009 Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Athens in April. The top winner in the senior division will compete at the International Fair in Reno, NV May 10-16. Judges for the fair will be selected based on specific criteria and qualifications in the areas of academia and industry.
Area companies and organizations are invited to support the regional fair by sponsoring local awards, purchasing advertising in the program, and making donations. Students may be recognized for outstanding work with plaques, logo items, or cash awards.
