EmmaLue Jordan Preer 50 Years: A Celebration of Service
Mrs. EmmaLue Jordan Preer, affectionately known as the Centennial Golden Girl, is a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She became a member of Gamma Upsilon Chapter at Savannah State College in 1958. Upon graduation from Savannah State College, she transferred to the graduate chapter, Gamma Sigma Omega, where she has served continuously. EmmaLue has never been an inactive member of the sorority. In Gamma Sigma Omega, she has held the offices of President, Hostess, Historian, and Member-at-Large.
Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter presented a program and reception for their "Golden Girl." The celebration was held Sunday, August 24, 2008, 5:00 PM, at EmmaLue's church, St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, Rev. Christian A. Alimaji, M.S.P., Pastor. The Protocol Committee coordinated this event that was chaired by Mrs. Johnye Gillans. The service was orchestrated with love, sensitivity, and reflections, beginning with Centennial President, Emma Jean Conyers, and ending with the Lord's blessings by Pastor Alimaji. Reflections on the Golden Girl's life as an Alpha Kappa Alpha member, an educator, a friend, a family member, and church member were informative and amusing to a packed church audience. Presentations were made and a letter was read from the Centennial International President, Dr. Barbara A. McKinzie. In a skit, Gamma Sigma Omega members, who are already Golden Girls, welcomed EmmaLue into the fold.
This fellowship of love was transferred to the reception where her sorors, family, and friends, waited patiently in line to be received by the Golden Girl. Small talk, laughs, and gifts embellished this celebration of service.
EmmaLue received her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Elementary Education from Savannah State College. She retired after forty years as Family Advocate from J.H.C. Butler Elementary School in 1999. She returned to teaching, her first love, in 2001.
She is a Life Member of the Savannah State University National Alumni Association and served two terms as President for the Savannah Chapter of SSUNAA.
She has two children: Richard P. Preer, III and Emily Preer-Williams, also an Alpha Kappa Alpha member in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter, four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
