WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) announced that the Chatham Area Transit Authority in Savannah has been named as the recipient of a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"Chairman Liakakis and his fellow commissioners are to be applauded for their efforts in acquiring these funds for the transit authority," Congressman Kingston said. "Public transportation is essential for citizens in an area like Savannah and grants such as these ensure that the system will continue to be safe and efficient."

The amount of the transportation grant is $1,446,786. The funds will be used to purchase four replacement buses and to continue work on the Savannah Transfer Station.

"We appreciate Congressman Kingston's efforts in helping us get this grant," said Pete Liakakis, Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. "This money really helps because there is such a great need for public transportation in our area. Improvements to our transfer station and new buses will help us tremendously and we are glad that we can continue accommodating the needs of our citizens."
