Jackson Selected Independent Preseason Defensive Player of the Year

Savannah State senior defensive back Javorris Jackson was tabbed as the 2008 Independent Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy's Magazine. Jackson was a honorable mention All-America selection in 2007 by the Sports Network for players who compete in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Southfield, Michigan native led the team in pass breakups with seven and interceptions with five. Listed at 6-3, 216, Jackson was second on the team with 74 tackles. Jackson was named the 2007 Most Valuable Player for the SSU football team at the annual Athletics Banquet held in April.

SSU Baseball Signs 13 Savannah State baseball coach Carlton Hardy has signed 13 players for his Tiger baseball program, including outfielder Bubba Green of Calvany Baptist and second baseman/pitcher Chris Lawor of Jenkins High. Green was recently named the Student-Athlete of the Year at Calvary while Lawlor won the Silver Sluggewr Award at Jenkins. Others inking grant-in-aids were Antonio Scott (Decatur, GA), Bryce Stokes (Lithonia, GA), Taylor Lamb (Conyers, GA), Darien Campbell (Cottageville, SC), Chris Smith (Conyers, GA), Blaise Woods (Detroit, MI), Randall Chambers (Bethpage, TN), Dustin Todd (White House, TN), Dychal Bowles (Snellville, GA), Joe Jackson (San Palbo, CA) and Shawn Gallagher (McDonough,GA).

Steadman Earns Preseason Honors

James Steadman has been selected to the second team preseason All-SIAC team for the 2008 football season. The senior wide receiver who graduated from Beach High School led Morehouse in receptions (33) yards (566) and touchdowns (4) among receivers last season.

Lady Warriors Ink Contracts

Brandi Williams and Tonique Frasier of the Savannah Lady Warrios have signed professional basketball contacts to continue their careers. Williams signed with Leonas de Ponce in Puerto Rico while Frasier signed with Team Alku in Finland.
