Walter Moore Tigers Start Fall Practice
The Savannah State football team reported for fall camp on August 1 and held their first practice on August 2. SSU had just under 90 players show up for first-year coach Robby Wells. Running back Tim Jackson and defensive back Brent McCall are the two smallest players in camp at 5-foot-7. Sophomore defensive back Jamar Graham is the lightest at 148 pounds. 6-foot-8 junior tight end Howard Boone is the tallest player on the team while senior defensive lineman Roland Jackson and senior offensive lineman Justin Norton are the biggest at 338-pounds each. Of the 88 players in camp, 50 are new to the program.
Tigers Unveil New Uniforms
During their 2008 Media Day, the Savannah State football team unveiled their new uniforms for the upcoming season. The new uniforms, made by Adidas, look similar to Clemson and seem to be a hit with the players. "The new uniforms have a great fit. It doesn't allow for opponents to grab your jersey easily," said senior wide receiver Isaiah Osborne. Senior wide receiver Bernard Coleman added "the uniforms look very good. When you look good, you feel good and that helps you to play better." The jersey will have a tiger paw on the shoulder and a small paw at the vneck. The pants will have a tiger paw on one hip and an Adidas logo on the other hip. SSU will continue to wear their traditional orange helmets, which will also have a new logo on the side.
SSU Volleyball Adds 10 New
Players
Malik Jones, head women's volleyball coach at Savannah State will welcome 10 new players to the program this year, with six coming from the metro Atlanta area. The ten newcomers are Erica Demons (Ballard HS/Louisville, KY); De'Ann Dukes (Morrow HS/Morrow, GA); Saadia Gauthier (Camden County HS/Kingsland, GA); Jennifer Lowe (Frederick Douglass HS/Atlanta,GA); Shirritia Newton (South Cobb HS/Austell, GA); Nabori Perez (Luella HS/Locust Grove, GA); Ella Scott (Shawnee Mission North HS/Overland Park, KS); Shatice White (Morrow HS/Morrow, GA); Whitney Bullock (McEachern HS/Powder Springs, GA); and Katryna Williams (Banneker HS/College Park, GA).
Tuskegee Picked To Win SIAC
Tuskegee was chosen as the favorite to win the 2008 SIAC football title followed by Albany State, Fort Valley State, Morehouse and Stillman. Tuskegee is also ranked #23 by the USA Today College Football Poll, #6 by the Sporting News and #16 by the Lindsey Magazine Top 25. The predicted order of finish were chosen by the SIAC Football Coaches Association. Tuskegee, who went 12-0 last year, got seven first-place votes while Albany State, Fort Valley State and Clark Atlanta got one apiece.
