Teshawnda Shuman Certified as Masters Teacher

Teshawnda Shuman Teshawnda Shuman, an Effinghamn County teacher, joined ranks of more than 50 teachers from throughout the state who earned Master Teacher certification in 2008.

Teshawnda Shuman earned the distinction by showing sustained academic progress of her students, illustrated by standardized tests among other requirements.

She teaches at Ebenezer Middle School in Effingham County.

"These 54 teachers join the nearly 300 Master Teachers before them who have clearly demonstrated their expertise in helping ou children achieve at higher levels," Gov. Sonny Perdue said in a released statement. "They are experts at inspiring students to learn, and I'm pround to recognize them for their outstanding work in one of our most honorable professions."

Mrs. Shuman took on education as a second career. Shuman earned an undergraduate degree in English and started working in a registrars office.

She completed the Pathway to Teaching program through Armstrong Atlantic State University and embarked on a teaching career. Shuman has been teaching for six years.

Shuman said creating lifelong learners and motivating students to get excited about education were two of the things she enjoyed about being a teacher.

Superintendent Randy Shearhouse said the Master Teacher certification proves teachers are making a difference.

"The important part about being named Master Teacher is you are showing the gains of your sutdents," Shearhouse said. "It's a great honor on her part. She is making progress with the kids."
