Volleyball Falls To Jacksonville State 3-0


Savannah State University volleyball team fell to Jacksonville State 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-8) in its first match of the 2015 season at the Kennesaw State Invitational in the KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw, Ga.

Freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam led the Lady Tigers with seven kills and added two digs, while junior setter Caitlynn Masoe led the team with 15 assists and eight digs and added four kills with a .500 hitting percentage.

Senior outside hitter Christian Lyle added four kills and a .375 hitting percentage and freshman outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile added four kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

In the first set, JSU (1-0) had an early 3-2 lead, but then outscored the Lady Tigers (0-1) 22-12 to win the set and to take an early 1-0 lead. Lyle led SSU connecting on all three attempts and a service ace, while Masoe led with four digs and four assists.

The second set went back-and-forth early as neither team had a lead of more than two points. With the score tied at eight, JSU scored five of the next six points to take a 13-9 lead, but the Lady Tigers battled back scoring the next two points to trail by three, 13- 11. The Gamecocks scored the next seven points for a 20-11 lead and won the set by scoring five of the last nine points. Tam led SSU with four kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while Masoe added six assists and four digs and junior libero Alexis Washington contributed with four digs. Savannah State had an 11-8 advantage in kills.

JSU got off to a fast start in the final set with a 16-3 lead forcing a timeout from Savannah State. But the Lady Tigers showed some fight scoring the next four points. The Gamecocks won the set and the match scoring nine of the final 10 points. Masoe connected on both attacks and added five assists, while Tam added two kills.

The Gamecocks were led by Emily Rutherford with eight kills, Jennifer Hart with 23 assists and Hannah Kirk with 11 digs.
