Jones Named SSU

Volleyball Coach

Savannah State athletics director Bart Bellairs recently promoted Malik Jones to head women’s volleyball coach. Jones replaces Yociara Basilio whose contract was not renewed. Jones served as Basilio’s assistant last season and also serves as an assistant on the SSU women’s basketball staff.

Jones, 27, is a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas and graduated from Texas College in 2007.

SSU Football Starts

August 1

Savannah State football players will report to pre-season camp on August 1 to prepare for the Aug. 30 season-opener against Jacksonville. NCAA rules allow the Tigers to only allow 90 players in camp. The battle at quarterback will be an interesting one. Offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Alan Hall said he will have six signal callers in preseason camp. Junior JaCorey Kilcrease will enter camp number one but will have to beat out incoming freshmen Kurvin Curry of Hartwell, GA; A. J. DeFilippis of Savannah; Daniel Wilson of Savannah; and Malik Allah of Carrolton, GA. Returning to the team after sitting out the 2007 season will be rising junior quarterback Javeres Taylor of Savannah.

New Tiger Cub

Former Savannah State women’s basketball standout Mabel Sanders Heath and her husband Guy recently had their first baby. Davon Heath was born July 15, 2008 at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta. Davon arrived at 12:39 am and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces and was 21 inches long. Mabel, a registered nurse, finished her SSU career in 1992 and led Division II in rebounds.

Mattox Cancer Update

In January 2008 we ran a two part cancer series on former Savannah State women’s tennis standout Phyllis Oliver Mattox. To keep you updated on her situation, Phyllis found a lump in her breast in April 2007 and was diagnosed with cancer in December. Since then she has been going to chemo treatment. The cancer started to spread and was found in her shoulder. Phyllis had mastectomy surgery July 24 at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, FL to remove the mass.

The surgery was successful and she is back home with her family recovering.
