Tigers Open Football Season

The Savannah State football team will begin the Robby Wells era on August 30 at Memorial Stadium when the Tigers host Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Coming off a 1-9 season, SSU will have a young squad. All-American candidate Javorris Jackson will lead the Tigers defense which will feature five linebackers. The offense will employ a four receiver set and one running back. Rashad Jackson will anchor the offensive line while JaCorey Kilcrease should get the nod at quarterback. Jacksonville is coming off a 3-8 campaign but return 56 lettermen including six who were picked pre-season all conference (Pioneer League) selections.

SSU Begins Volleyball and Cross Country Seasons

The Savannah State cross country team will kick off their 2008 season by participating in the Jacksonville Short Course Duals on August 29 in Jacksonville, Florida. Tyrone McCoy of Statesboro is the top runner for the SSU men while Antoinette Elam will lead the women. The SSU volleyball team will start their season under new head coach Malik Jones by hosting former SIAC rival Paine at Wilcox- Wiley Gym on August 30 at 12 noon. On August 31, SSU will host Division II Livingstone at 12 noon and NAIA opponent Edward Waters at 5p.m. April Hayes, who had 522 assists, and Kari Parker who tallied 216 kills will lead the volleyball squad.

SSU Grad Named SID At Clark Atlanta

Ruben Perez has been named sports information director at Clark Atlanta. He succeeds Charles Ward, who stepped down from his post to pursue other career opportunities. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Perez spent last year as Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information at Chicago State. Prior to his appointment at CSU, Perez served four years as media relations assistant at Savannah State. Perez earned his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising from SSU in 2007.

FVSU Falls To

Valdosta State Valdosta State racked up 555 yards of offense as they rolled to a season-opening 56-3 win over Fort Valley State before 4,433 fans at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on September 23. VSU led 21-0 after one quarter and took a 35-3 advantage into the half. The Blazers scored twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth to round out the scoring. Former Savannah State quarterback Garrett Williams threw for 47 yards for the Wildcats and former SSU linebacker Trent Newton had five tackles and recovered a fumble.
