Thunderbolt Students Receive Early Back to School Supplies

Students living in the town of Thunderbolt received early Back to School Supplies compliments of the Thunderbolt Community Improvement Association (TCIA). The organization sponsored a Family Day in the Park for residents of Thunderbolt.

The event was held on August 6, 2011 in the historic Nellie Johnson Park located near Tara Nursing Home in Thunderbolt. The day started with TCIA members Stella Lavin, Linda Buttersworth and Patty Rountree welcoming the students and their families to a day of games.

Once the students rested, they were able to listen to an informative discussion about safety and the police department presented by Office Rena Brown. Officer Brown was introduced to the group by Thunderbolt Police Chief Irene Pennington.

Officer Brown was an instant hit among the students who were curious about various things about the police department such as how to use handcuffs, taser guns and other aspects about being a policeman. After the discussion, the students were treated to a delicious feast of hotdogs prepared by Mayor Anna Maria Thomas. The students were eager to eat the food and talk with the new friends they met during the event. After the students finished eating, each student received a Thunderbolt recycling bag filled with plenty of school supplies donated by TCIA and Town of Thunderbolt staff members such as Town Administrator Linton Smith.

The president of TCIA, Kimberly Chappell-Stevens, Annie Chappell and Mayor Thomas made the presentations to the students. This event was another joint collaboration between the Town of Thunderbolt and the Thunderbolt Community Improvement Association.

The Town of Thunderbolt provided the recycling bags for the students as well as the use of the Nellie Johnson Park. The Public Works Department headed by Mr. Shawn Elmore ensured the park was ready for the festivities and provided a fan for ventilation for the guests. The Thunderbolt Fire Department provided coloring sheets and activity pages for the students to use.

The mission of the Thunderbolt Community Improvement Association is to work with the residents of Thunderbolt and collaborate with the local government to ensure the community thrives, especially the students living in the community.

When asked how they enjoyed the activities of the day, James Collins, 10 and Franklin Stevens, 10 exclaimed, “This was the best day ever!
