The Savannah Community Mourns the Loss of Rev. John E. Jennings


The Reverend John E. Jennings entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 29, 2015 at Candler Hospital surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was a native of Cope, SC and lived in Savannah many years. He was educated in the public schools of Chatham County and was a graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School Class of 1949 and Savannah State College (University). After being called into the ministry, he attended and graduated from the Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA. He was a faithful member of the National Baptist Convention USA, The General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Association. He was a member of Followers of Christ Baptist Church. He was a retired faithful employee of Union Camp/Union Bag Corporation. He was veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was also an avid bowler and a member of the Bowling League. He leaves to cherish his legacy: a loving wife of 59 ½ years, Vivian J. Jennings of Savannah GA., five daughters, Kathy (Eddie Sr.) Morgan of Rincon, GA., Jeanette (Oscar) Lewis of Richmond Hill, GA., Julia (Frank A., Sr.) King, Vianne Jennings, and Vera Jennings all of Savannah, GA., eight grandchildren, Shaneisla Baker of Savannah, GA, Ashle’ King of Savannah, GA., Anjuli (Kyron) Derien of Savannah, GA., LaTia (Michael) Smart of Rincon, GA., Eddie Morgan, Jr., of Savannah, GA., Frank A. (Veronica) King, Jr., of Port Wentworth, GA., Angel Lewis of Richmond Hill, GA., and Briyona Brack of Savannah, GA., seven great grandchildren, a special relative (raised as a brother), William “Bo” Jennings of Orangeburg, SC, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. In Lieu of Flowers the family is asking that contributions be made to The Rev. John E. Jennings Scholarship Fund at BB&T Bank. Service of Remembrance: will be held Thursday, June 4, 201 5:00-8:00pm at First Smyrna Baptist Church 1509 Burroughs Street Savannah, GA. Funeral service: will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday June 5, 2015 at First African Baptist Church 23 Montgomery Street, Savannah, Rev. Thurman N. Tillman, Pastor. Rev. Gerald Frazier Officiating. Interment ~ Hillcrest Abbey West.
