July’s Coastal Jazz Concert on Sunday, July 16th at 5 PM at the Benjamin M. Tucker Pavilion (The Club at Savannah Harbor) will be an intimate portrait of the music and lives of the musicians that most influenced Jody Espina. These tortured geniuses, including Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz were all phenomenal stars in their day and for all the heights they reached, their depths were equally profound. The music will be outstanding and the stories unforgettable. This special evening features Savannah’s most gifted and passionate saxophonist accompanied by a crème de crème rhythm section. The band will be: Jody Espina – Saxophones and Clarinet; Eric Jones – Piano; Maggie Evans – Bass; Billy Hoffman – Drums. Before moving to Savannah in 2005, Mr. Espina was the Director of the Jazz Department at the prestigious Hoff Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, New York, where he taught Jazz Theory, Improvisation, and ensembles. He was adjunct professor of Saxophone and Clarinet at Concordia College in Bronxville, New York. Because of the exponential growth of his business “JodyJazz,” which Espina founded in 2000, he made the difficult choice to stop teaching and devote all his non-playing time to JodyJazz.
Mr. Espina has performed live with show business legends Mel Torme’, Milton Berle, Patty Page and Country music icon, Eddie Arnold. He has also performed with Jazz greats Ben Tucker, Louis Bellson, Don Alias, Lew Solof, Vic Juris, Harvie Swartz, Bob Moses, Dave Douglas, the Charlie Persip Superband, Rachel Z, Rolf Sturm, Rob Henke, and Mark Feldman.
CJA Members and Students with valid IDs are admitted free. Non-member tickets are $20 and will be available at the door. The public is encouraged to attend.
So… Come early, get a good seat and prepare to be entertained, charmed, and astounded. It’s going to be an evening of great Jazz!
