The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 229, was held Saturday, October 6 at the T-Mobile arena. The main event was the fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Connor McGregor. This fight, something like Connor VS. Mayweather, was a fight you wanted to see. With Connor earning higher fight statistics, it still wasn’t enough to bring Khabib down. With a video surfacing of young aged Khabib using a bear as wrestling partner, that was enough for the public to see that he was a force to be reckoned with. “It is a pity that there was nothing more interesting when he was younger. In the end, this was a test of character more than exercise.” Says Abdulmanap, Khabib’s father, tells ToFight.Ru.
17 years later, this “test of character” would be surface again during the fight against Connor. Khabib endured four rounds with Connor, and three minutes into the 4th round, he won by submission. As Connor was held in a rear naked choke, he tapped out the match, allowing Khabib to take home the title of UFC lightweight champion.
Turmoil broke out after the match when Khabib is seen jumping over the match cage to attack Conner’s team, but the conflict quickly de-escalated after security in the arena stepped in. In the ESPN press conference, Khabib explained that prior to the match Connor spoke negatively about his family and religion. “When you put him [Connor] the wrong way, he’s going to tap. What happened today? They call him a two time world champion, but today he tapped and that is why the championship belt is here,” Khabib states to ESPN during the press conference
Nurmagomedov could become a new face in the light of UFC after his victory in the match, but after the brawl between him and Connor he is looking to face consequences for his actions. Khabib may be ordered to face sanctions from the Nevada state authorities because of the fight, and even worse he could potentially being stripped of the belt as a result.
McGregor hopes for a rematch in the future, but there has not been any sources to confirm that the fight will be put into place.
