The sanctuary was packed at a Special Meeting of Thankful Baptist Church members on Tuesday, January 22nd. After 14 months without a pastor and months of searching, listening to sermons and interviewing candidates, the time had come to vote. When the Tally Committee returned to an expectant audience and announced that Rev. Dr. Bobby Jones was the new pastor, the members erupted in applause and verbal thanks to God for sending him. The joy that night was overwhelming. Fast forward to Wednesday, January 30th. Thankful was holding its first Vision Conference of 2019. Pastor Jones arrived early. He was greeted with warm hugs and handshakes and “welcome back home, Pastor”. As he presided over the meeting, he listened intently to the budget, ministry reports and plans. He led the meeting with quiet power, abundant grace, and thoughtfulness. He spoke of how humbled he felt and thankful. Although Pastor Jones is a doctor and serves as the Medical Director at the VA Center in Savannah, that is not what he focuses on at Thankful. He told the members that what he wanted most, was to “do things right”. He does not revel in titles, just simply, Pastor Jones. His compassion and reputation for being a servant and leader is the kind of shepherd that Thankful prayed for and fasted. His first sermon, as the new pastor will be Sunday, February 10th at which time Thankful will be celebrating its 104th Church Anniversary. Sunday school begins at 9:00 and service is at 10:00 a.m. The theme is “It was God’s Grace”. Pastor Jones’ installation is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. More information will follow in the coming weeks. The church doors at Thankful are open. Please join us for worship.
