Talk about Milestones … Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is Celebrating Its 100th Anniversary

Hundreds of members and supporters packed St. Phillip A.M.E. Church for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Centennial Founders Day on Sunday, January 13, 2013. As the sorority looked back on its past, they took time out to honor the founders … 22 young women who were students at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1913. These young women formed the organization as a way of promoting academic excellence and assisting people in need.

While Savannah Alumnae Chapter President, Grayzel Ellison and more than forty local Deltas attended the national Centennial Founders Day activities in Washington, D.C. this past weekend, approximately 400 Deltas in a “sea of red”, celebrated here in Savannah. At Sunday’s Founders Day celebration, twenty-two members of Savannah Alumnae, Delta Nu, and Tau Alpha Chapters dressed in period costumes to represent the founders.

The group formed an

exact replica of the historical picture of the founders as they were introduced to a narrative of the each founder’s biography, written by Juanita Adams, Program Chair.

One “young” lady who is older than Delta Sigma Theta, 101 years old Mrs. Sadie D. Steele, dressed in red, took all the attention away from her fellow Deltas when she entered during the processional. Centennial Committee Chair Shirley James introduced her to a rousing standing ovation. County Commission Chairman Al Scott and Honorable Mayor Edna Jackson brought several additional standing ovations as they paid tribute to Mrs. Steele.

Less than two months after Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was organized, the founders courageously joined in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. in 1913. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was the only African American women’s group to participate in the march for women’s

right to vote. The local chapters will reenact the Women’s Suffrage March on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The march will begin at Forsyth Park at 10:00A. M., and end at City Hall. All area women and girls’ groups are invited to participate. For additional information or to register, please call (912) 232-6048.

Through its community outreach and mentoring programs, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is truly a sisterhood called to serve… a sisterhood that has transformed many lives and has impacted countless communities around the world, our nation, and right here at home. Savannah Alumnae, Delta Nu, and Tau Alpha Chapters would like to extend a special “thank you” to fellow Greeks, friends, others who attended the celebration on Sunday, and the entire community for its continued support. Please join the Deltas for the Women’s Suffrage March and other centennial activities.
