This grant that St. Vincent’s Academy received is an award from American Association of University Women. The grant is for nearly $10,000 to begin new Math initiatives over a twoyear period, called “Girls Just Want to Have SUM Fun!” The Math program is designed to concentrate on defining math concepts and operations within the num -ber system, placing a greater emphasis on student’s understanding of the concepts of operations and numbers, defining “bridge” concepts and linking them together.

Most importantly, innovative learning will take part by allowing students to participate in group workshops which will enforce skills with hands-on activities, games, visual representations, and iPad usage and applications . . . making math fun! The group will also participate in field trips to reinforce positive attitudes towards math usage in “the real world” in meaningful and exciting ways.

These girls will be mentored throughout the year by the Director of the program to ensure that they are connecting with the information in a positive way. The Director of the program will be SVA teacher, Teresa Weston, who is a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy. She holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Howard University, Washington, D.C. The American Association of University Women has dedicated more than 120 years to the advancement of education and has a long and distinguished history of advancing educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe.
