St. John Baptist Award Scholarships

In a community where crime among young people has become the number one subject on the hearts and minds of the citizens of our great city, St. John Baptist Church “The Mighty Fortress” has pledged to groom our children to become viable leaders through the gift of education.

On Sunday, August 7, 2016 Pastor, Dr. George P. Lee, III and the Scholarship for Excellence Committee of the Education Ministry of St. John Baptist Church, “The Mighty Fortress,” presented scholarships to four deserving students of the church. The St. John Scholarship is the first ever to be awarded, and provides educational assistance for 2-4 years of the chosen student’s matriculation at their chosen college and/or university.

The recipients are: Jaccaria Ellison received a 4 year scholarship to Valdosta State. She will be majoring in Nursing with a min or in Psychology. She is the daughter of Barbara and James Caughman.

Jaylin Scott received $2000 scholarship towards his education at SavannahState University with a Business Administration major. He is the son of Kathleen and Fletcher Scott.

Leah Overton received $2000 scholarship. She will be attending North CarolinaCentral with a major in Nursing and a minor in Spanish. She is the daughter of Sonya Nethles and Andre Overton.

Jakayla Davis received a $2000 scholarship to attend Coastal Georgia Technical College in Brunswick, Ga. She is the daughter of Ms. Betty Ector.

In addition, “oneyear” Memorial Scholarships were awarded to selected students who have distinguished themselves through outstanding academic achievement and Christian values. Memorial Scholarships are donated and awarded to students in memory of a loved one with the support of St. John Baptist Church.
