SSU No. 1 Seed In Southern Division


The Savannah State University softball team (24-21, 12-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) enters postseason play with the MEAC Softball Championship this week in Ormond Beach, Fla., in a double elimination format at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The Lady Tigers won the Southern Division and enters the championship as the No. 1 seed in the division and faces No. 4 Northern Division seed Morgan State University (13-26, 8-8 MEAC) Thursday at 10 a.m. in game one of the tournament.

No. 2 Northern Division seed Norfolk State University (17-23, 11-6 MEAC) faces No. 3 Southern Division seed Florida A&M University (23-27, 11-4 MEAC) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in game three. The winner of game one faces the winner of game three at 7 p.m. in game seven Thursday, while the loser of the two games faces at 4:30 p.m. in game five.

No. 1 Southern Division seed Delaware State University (27-16, 16-2 MEAC) faces No. 4 Southern Division seed North Carolina A&T State University (17-30, 6-9 MEAC) at 10 a.m. Thursday in game two, while No. 2 Southern Division seed Bethune-Cookman University (17-30, 11-4 MEAC) faces No. 3 Northern Division seed Hampton University (19-26, 11-7 MEAC) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in game four.

The winners of game two and game four plays at 7 p.m. Thursday in game eight, while the loser of both games faces at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in game six.

Friday starts off with the loser of game seven against the winner of game six in game nine and the winner of game five against the loser of game eight in game 10 with both games at 10 a.m.

The day continues with the winner of game seven and the winner of game eight at 1 p.m. in game 11, the winner of game 10 and the winner of game nine at 3 p.m. in game 12 and finishes with the loser of game 11 and the winner of 12 at 6 p.m.

The final day will pair up game 11 winner against the winner of game 13 at 1 p.m. in the championship game with a second game at 3:30 p.m. if the winner of game 13 wins.

The winner of the championship receives an automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association with the first round beginning on May 20- 22.

Savannah State is looking for its first softball tournament conference championship in school history. Last season, the Lady Tigers entered the MEAC Championship as the No. 1 seed in the Southern Division, but went 2-2 during the tournament.

The Rattlers won the championship last season with a 2-0 win over the Lady Wildcats for advance to the NCAA for the second consecutive season.
