SSU Stumbles Against Jacksonville

The Robby Wells era at Savannah State got off to a rocky start as the Tigers fell to Jacksonville 20-7 before a crowd of 4,441 fans at Memorial Stadium. The teams battled to a scoreless halftime but the Dolphins (1- 0) made adjustments at intermission and scored 17 points in the third quarter. SSU scored its only touchdown of the game midway in the fourth quarter as freshman quarterback Kurvin Curry threw a 32-yard scoring pass to senior wideout Tyron Kirkland. Derek Williams added the extra point and Savannah State trailed 17-7. JU answered the Tigers (0-1) with a field goal for a 20-7 lead. Curry led SSU in rushing (43 yards) and passing (73 yards). Isaiah Osborne caught three balls for 38 yards. Javorris Jackson had 12 tackles and Calvin Leonard had 11. SSU will play Livingstone in the 15th Joe Turner Classic on September 6 at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers will attempt to break a nine-game losing streak, dating back to last season.

SSU Cross Country Team Opens Season

The Savannah State cross country team opened their 2008 season participating in the Jacksonville Duals on August 29. The SSU women defeated Bethune-Cookman but lost to Florida A&M, Jacksonville and Stetson. Sadie Sallow was the top SSU runner finishing 12th out of 30 runners. The SSU men defeated Bethune and Jacksonville but fell to FAMU and Stetson. SSU’s Tyrone McCoy was sixth overall while Gabriel Davis was seventh.

Concordia Defeats Livingstone

Concordia-Selma improved to 2-0 with a 26-21 victory over Livingstone on August 30 in the HBCU Classic played in Greenville, South Carolina. Concordia won the game despite making five turnover and getting 120 yards in penalties. Concordia led 20-7 at the half and returned a interception for a touchdown in the third quarter to increase their lead.

FVSU Holds Off Clark Atlanta

Fort Valley State linebacker Steven Jackson sacked Clark Atlanta quarterback Cedric Johnson on a fourth down play to give the Wildcats a 24-19 win over CAU (0-1) at Panther Field on August 30. FVSU (1-1) held a 10-0 lead in the second quarter but the Panthers put together a 73- yard scoring drive to cut their deficit to 10-6 with 2:31 left before the half. Both teams had back-to-back kickoff returns to start the third quarter and FVSU’s Garrett Williams tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 24-13 lead.
