Carter Sets School Record at Catawba
In the first track meet for his college career, Jones Carter set a indoor school record in the triple jump.
Carter, who is a freshmen jumper at Catawba College, set the record on December 2 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the JDL Early Bird Duels.
The Savannah native had a leap of 13.70m which was good enough for third place. Carter’s jump broke the school record of 12.86m which was set December 2, 2017 by Joey Monfort.
Catawba is back in action after the holiday break, participating in the Finn Pincus Invitational on Jan. 25-26 in Salem, Virginia.
Carter is also doing a good job in the classroom. During the fall semester, the sports management major earned a 3.60 grade point average. He is the son of Samuel and Kesha Carter and is a 2018 graduate of Bethesda Academy.
Myers, VSU Win National Championship
Valdosta State won the Division II national championship in football on December 15 with a 49-47 win over Ferris State. The game was played at McKinney Stadium in McKinney, Texas.
The Blazers finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record to capture their fourth national title and first since 2012 (2004, 2007, 2012, 2018).
Among the players on the team is Savannah native and Johnson High grad Darrell Myers.
Although the 6-foot-6 wide receiver did not have a catch in the championship contest, Myers did receive some playing time.
For the 2018 season, the junior had 10 receptions for 143 yards and four touchdowns.
VSU head coach Kerwin Bell was pleased with Myers’ effort this season and looks forward to 2019. “Darrell played wide receiver for us and had four touchdowns this season. We look for him to have a big season next year.”
