SSU Holds Athletics Banquet

The Savannah State Department of Athletics along with the SSU Student Athletic Advisory Committee and SSU Community Booster Club held the annual SSU Athletic Banquet on April 25 in Tiger Arena.

Student- athletes David Handler (football) and Charmia Graham (women’s basketball) served as master and mistress of ceremony.

Those receiving Volleyball awards were Christian Lyle (Coaches Award), Chinenye Ofodile (Rookie of the Year) and Gabrielle Nathaniel (MVP).

Cheer awards went to Kortney Clonts (Leadership), Morgan Moore (Spirit) and Kaleah Hardnet (Perseverance).

Women’s Basketball superlatives were Tiyonda Davis and Kenyata Hendrix (Co-MVP), Tiyonda Davis (Defensive Player of the Year), Jeremica Edwards (Best Newcomer) and Rhianna Warren (Coaches Award).

Men’s Basketball awards went to Chris Martin and Lenjo Kilo (Co-MVP), Troyce Manassa (Offensive Player of the Year) and Dexter McClanahan (Freshman of the Year).

Miara Elmore (Women’s Outstanding Performance) and Michael Smith (Men’s Outstanding Performance) were the winners in Cross Country.

In Track & Field, Alysia Potts (Women’s Field), Jahmee Reeves (Women’s Sprinter), Conner Christian (Men’s Field) and Kevin Todd Woodring (Men’s Sprinter) took home top honors.

Softball awards went to Alexis Singleton (Player of the Year), Antonette Smith (Defensive Player of the Year), Molly Lillis (Tiger Award), Cortni Jones (Rookie of the Year) and Amanda Hallman (Pitcher of the Year).

In Baseball, Ryan McCranie (Pitcher of the Year), KhalydCox (Freshman of the Year) and Jonathan Moore (Offensive Player of the Year), received awards.

Those receiving awards in Football were James Livingston (Newcomer of the Year), David Crowley (Most Improved), Devon Stainrod and Conner Christian (Best Linemen), Trevion Ashford (Defensive MVP) and Arshon Spaulding (Offensive MVP).

Also during the ceremony, the annual W.W. Law Scholarship was presented to two student-athletes by the SSU Booster Club. This year’s winners were David Handler and Chasney Jenkins. Handler is a quarterback on the football team and Jenkins plays outfield on the softball squad.

FVSU Narrows Search For Football Coach

Fort Valley State has narrowed their search for a new head football coach down to three candidates. The three finalists are Kevin Porter, Charlie Jackson and Joshua Dean.

Porter played collegiately at Auburn and in the NFL with Chiefs and Jets. He has coached in the Arena League and most recently served as an assistant on the staff at West Georgia University.

Jackson was born in Vienna, Georgia and played collegiately at Air Force. He is a member of the College Football Rules Enforcement Group and has had coaching stops on the NFL (Packers and Broncos) and college level (Colorado, UCLA, Utah State, Buffalo and the Air Force Academy).

Dean was most recently the head football coach at Kentucky State. He also spent some time as an assistant at FVSU. Dean played collegiately at San Diego State and later played in the pro ranks for the Chicago Bears.

Campus interviews for the trio took place on May 31 in the C.W. Pettigrew Auditorium.
