Former SSU Basketball Player Passes Away
Maurice Gray, who was a member of the Savannah State men’s basketball team for two years has died. Gray died on March 19 from complications from kidney disease.
The Orlando, Florida native played for the Tigers during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons, for then coach John Williams after transferring from Valencia Community College.
Gray, a 6-4 forward who studied criminal justice, averaged 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds as a junior and 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds as a senior. Renee Boyd Beckham, who knew Gray from their days in high school, junior college and Savannah State, shared her memories. “Mo’ and I played basketball together in high school, junior college, and we were recruited to play basketball at Savannah State together. It was good to have someone from home with you in a strange place. He was my brother who kept me out of a lot of situations that weren’t good for me. That constant reminder in my ear that we were there to finish college and play basketball.”
Gray is survived by his sons Christian and Phillip and daughter Desuanda as well as other family members. Funeral services for Gray will be April 2 at 12 noon at Majestic Life Ministries located at 821 S. Kirkman Road in Orlando.
