Gonzalez Named MEAC Coach of the Year

Savannah State head coach softball Jose Gonzalez was named the 2015 MEAC Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Tigers to a regular season record of 20- 15 and a 13-1 record in the conference. SSU won the MEAC Southern Division regular season title. Gonzalez is the winningest coach in SSU’s softball history after eight seasons at the helm. This is the second MEAC Coach of the Year award for Gonzalez. In the program’s first year of competition within the conference, 2012, he led the Lady Tigers to a MEAC Southern Division regular season title and a 12-3 conference record.

Elder Makes MEAC All-Tournament Team

player Mendez Elder was named to the 2015 Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference All-Tournament Baseball Team. During the tournament, the centerfielder from Atlanta batted .250 with a double, two home runs, three runs and three RBI.

Harris, Dash Doing Well At Marquette

Savannah natives Terica Harris and Dwayne Dash are doing well in the Marquette track & field program. The Sol C. Johnson High graduates recently wrapped up their regular seasons with the Golden Eagles. Harris, a freshman, competed in the 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump. During the outdoor season, Harris’ best time in the 100m was 12.61 while her best time in the 200m was 25.38. Her best effort in the field events were 5.38m (long jump) and 12.00m (triple jump). The biology major is the daughter of Jennifer Marshall. Dash, a sophomore, competes

in the long jump and triple jump. As a freshman, his best long jump attempt was 6.97m but this season he increased his measurements to a personal best of 7.16m. Dash had a triple jump of 13.44m as a freshman but was able to jump 13/47m in the 2015 Big East Championships which was good enough for 5th place. Dash won long jump events at two meets this season. The son of Betty and Dwayne Dash is majoring in chemistry.

Peacock Leaves SSU Sports Department

Savannah State assistant sports information director Joshua Peacock has decided to leave the school, after three years. He served as the primary media contact for women’s basketball, softball, women’s tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, men’s and women’s track & field and the men’s and women’s golf teams. Peacock is now employed by the Savannah Morning News.

Allen Signs Football Contract

Former Alabama State football player Tovar Allen has signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins. The 6’-6”, 315 pound Allen was an offensive tackle, was a three-year starter along the Hornets offensive line. During his career with the Hornets, ASU led the SWAC in scoring two years and averaged 30 points per game for three consecutive seasons. Allen, who lives in Rincon, is the son of Tovar Allen Sr. and Katherine H. James
