Elliott, Sinclair, Mike Earn Hoop Honors

A trio of local basketball players have earned end of the year honors. Dominique Elliott (Groves High) was named to the All-MEAC Third Team. The 6-9 Elliott, who is a junior at Maryland-Eastern Shore, finished the regular season averaging 7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. James Sinclair (Savannah High) was named to the Southern Conference first team. The senior at Western Carolina averages 19.1 points and two steals per game.

South Georgia Technical College sophomore TaQuandra Mike (Groves High) has been named to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division I first team All-Conference squad. At the time of the announcement, the 5-9 Mike was averaging 16.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 blocks per game.

SSU Spring Sports Update

The Savannah State baseball team opened their MEAC play by losing a three-game series at Florida A&M. FAMU won the first game on a double-header 3-2 on March 7 while the Tigers (5-10, 1-2) bounced back to win the second game 7-5. In the series finale on March 8, the Rattlers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 5-4 victory.

The SSU softball squad traveled to Birmingham to play in the annual Tiny Laster Tournament. SSU defeated Alabama State 8-5 on March 6, and on March 7 topped Grambling 7-1 and Alabama State 7-3. The SSU women’s tennis team (2-4) downed Albany State 5-0 in a road match played on March 7.

Albany State, Benedict Win SIAC Titles

The Albany State women and the Benedict men captures SIAC basketball titles on March 8 in Birmingham at Bill Harris Arena. ASU defeated Benedict, who was the defensing champion, 74-64. It was the Rams first conference title since 1998 and their eighth overall. Tournament MVP Mecca Frost tallied a double-double, with 28 points and 10 rebounds, to go with eight assists for ASU (19-9). Albany State will play Union (26-3) , champion of the Gulf South Conference on March 13 in the first round of the D-II tournament in Jackson, Tenn. In the men’s contest, Deonte Johnson sank two free throws with four seconds left to lift the Benedict to a 63-61 victory over Lane. BC (19-11) advances to the NCAA Division II Tournament as the automatic qualifier from the SIAC and will play number one seed Florida Southern (29-1) in the first round in Lakeland, Fla. on March 14 at a time to be announced.

FLH 300 Club Golf Tournament

The FLH 300 Club Inc. Golf Tournament will be held at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, GA on April 10, 2015. The cost of the tournament will be $75.00 per person which includes the greens and cart fees, range balls, and buffet lunch. Beverage carts will be available for drink and snack purchases for the duration of the tournament.

We will have a shotgun start at 9:00am with presentation of prizes and recognition of teams at the conclusion. The field this year will be limited to the first 80 golfers that sign up. Completion of the golf should be around 2pm with a lunch buffet, awarding of prizes and team recognition immediately afterwards. This should have everyone on their way back home by 3pm.

We will have a longest drive hole (Men and Women) and closest to the pin on 2 par 3’s.

To give everyone a fair chance to help their teams and make the tournament more enjoyable for all, we will play three sets of tees: mens (White), ladies (Red), and seniors (65) years or older (Green).
