Lady Tigers Sweep SC State

The Savannah State softball team swept a three-game weekend series at South Carolina State recently. SSU won a double header on May 3 by scores of 3-0 and 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 7-4 win on may 4. The first game of the double-header was a pitcher’s dual with SSU getting 4 hits and the Bulldogs getting 3. Megan Uhrman and Imani Gayle each had a double for SSU. In the second game, Amanda McDowell struck out 9 batters while Torrian Wright hit a solo home run. In the final game of the series, Alexis singleton drove in 3 runs while Antonette Smith had 2 RBI for SSU (25-19, 9-6).

SSU Holds Off Wildcats

The Savannah State baseball team salvaged a win in the final game of their weekend series with Bethune-Cookman at Tiger Filed with a 8-6 victory on May 4. Cookman scored 5 runs in the first inning but the Tigers rallied back with 4 runs in the second inning and went ahead 6-5 in the 5th inning. A two-run single by David Richards extended SSU’s lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the 8th. B-CU had the bases loaded in the 9th but could only manage one run. Zachary Brigham hit a home run for the Tigers (19- 28, 10-13) while Parker Nix had 4 singles. Kevin Herlihy struck out 5 batters in his 6.2 innings on the mound. Bethune swept a twin bill from SSU on May 3 by scores of 8-2 and 7-2. Cookman had 17 hits in the first game and 13 hits in the second game. Todd Hagen had 2 hits and scored a run for SSU in the first game while Charles Sikes hit a two-run double for the Tigers in the second contest.

SC State AD Steps Down

South Carolina State athletics director Charlene Johnson stepped down from her position on April 15. Johnson served as Bulldogs AD for almost 11 years but will now serve as a fundraising position within the athletic department. The resume’ if the SCSU alumnae includes being the first female AD at SC State; the only woman to serve as Chairperson of the Directors of Athletics in the MEAC; and the first full-time female coach at SC State. She was the only female athletics director in the Palmetto State.

Cheryl Miller To Coach At Langston

Langston athletic director Mike Garrett has hired Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller as their new women’s basketball coach. Miller brings quite a resume to the NAIA program that went 20-13 last season. She was a four-time All-America player and won two national titles at Southern California and helped the United States win the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. She coached at USC for two seasons, leading the school to the regional final in 1994, and was 70-52 with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury from 1997-2000. Miller also has had a long broadcasting career.
