SSU Ends Regular Season With Win

The Savannah State basketball teams ended their regular season with a sweep of South Carolina State in Tiger Arena on March 6. The Lady Tigers won 60-51 while the SSU men claimed a 69-50 victory. Ezinne Kalu led the SSU women with17 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals while Jasmine Kirkland added 14 points and 7 rebounds and Kenyata Hendrix chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds. It was the final home game for seniors Kalu, Kirkland, Shawanda Hanton, Zadous Pollard and Charmaine Greene.

In the men’s game, Jyles Smith was the only SSU player in double figures with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Deven Williams contributed 9 points and 5 assists. Smith and Williams joined fellow seniors Khiry White, Patrick Hendley, Stephen Wilson, Joshua Montgomery, Angelo Davis and Marcus Hutchins in playing their final game in Tiger Arena. The Lady Tigers (17-13) entered the MEAC tournament seeded 5th and played Morgan State in the opening round while the SSU men (12-18) also drew the 5th seed and played South Carolina State in the first round.

FAMU Sweeps SSU In Baseball

Florida A&M swept a weekend series in baseball from Savannah State in games played March 8 & 9. The Rattlers won a double header 10-7 and 3-2 on Saturday and completed the sweep with a 11-7 victory on Sunday. Lee Moore had three hits for the Tigers in the first game and added a double in the second game. The three losses drop the Tigers to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the MEAC.

Tabor Joins SSU Athletics Staff

Bridgett Tabor recently joined the Savannah State athletic staff and will serve as athletics academic program specialists. Tabor replaces Brandon Benjamin who left in December to join the staff at Louisiana Tech as football academic advisor. A graduate of Fort Valley State, tabor has also worked at Nebraska and Oral Roberts.

Shaw, Curtis Wins Another CIAA title

Savannah native Jacques Curtis has coached Shaw (21- 8) to another CIAA championship as the Lady Bears defeated Fayetteville State 73-70 on March 1 to win their 4th straight conference title. Shaw will play Gannon in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament on March 14. In other women’s game of interest, Armstrong Atlantic State will play Lenoir Rhyne, Benedict will play Nova Southeastern and Albany State will play Delta State. AASU coach Fala Bullock was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year while Brigitta Barta was named Freshman of the Year. Paine senior Ariel Brown was named to the All-SIAC squad along with Hineville’s Kourtney Alexander who is a senior at Albany State.

On the men’s side, former SSU coach Sammy Jackson was named SIAC Coach of the Year. Jackson led Fort Valley State to a 19-8 regular season after going 8-18 last year. Tuskegee, the SIAC tournament champion, will play Florida Southern in the first round of the D-II playoffs.
