Tigers On Winning Streak

The Savannah State men’s basketball team improved to 6-12 overall and more importantly 4-0 in the MEAC last week with wins over Howard and Bethune-Cookman. SSU defeated Howard 56-54 on the road January 13 and topped Bethune 70-60 in overtime on Jan. 18 at home. Against Howard, the Tigers went the final four minutes without a field goal but made some key free throws down the stretch to earn the win before the crowd of 2,750. Reserves Alante Fenner and Joshua Montgomery led the way for SSU with 13 and 12 points respectively. In the Bethune game, the Tiger Arena crowd of 3,220 saw SSU fight back from a eight point deficit to take the game into overtime tied at 54 thanks to a key free throw by Keierre Richards with 13 seconds left. In the extra period, the Tigers outscored a struggling B-CU team 16-6. Richards had 17 points for SSU while Jeremiah Hill added 12 and Terel Hall scored 11.

Kalu Leading SSU Women

The Savannah State women’s basketball squad picked up a pair of wins last week behind the play of guard Ezinne Kalu. In a 65-49 road victory over Howard on January 13, Kalu scored 20 points and in a 58-54 home win over Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 18 the New Jersey native had 17 points. In the Howard game, the Bison led 25-24 at the half and led by six with 11:41 left in the second half. SSU kicked their offense in gear and finished the game with a 31-9 run. Jasmine Kirkland had 13 points while Tiyonda Davis had 10 points and nine rebounds. SSU saw a 12 point lead disappear against Bethune as the Wildcats tied the game at 52 with 1:45 left. SSU (10-8) responded with six unanswered points to go ahead 58-52 with seven ticks left and improved to 3-1 in the MEAC. Jasmine Norman added 16 points while Davis chipped in 11 and eight rebounds.

Slocum Steps Down As Football Coach

After 23 years as the head football coach at Macon’s Mount de Sales High School, Robert Slocum has stepped down. Slocum will remain as the schools athletic director. The Macon native posted a record of 134-134-2 and led the Cavaliers to the GISA 1996 state championship. As a high school senior, Scolum ran for 1,236 yards in leading Mount de Sales to the 1973 state championship team. He then followed in his dad’s footsteps and played at Savannah State. Scolum’s father, SSU legendary Robert “Nancy Hanks” Slocum Sr., was the football head coach for 12 years at Macon’s Ballard-Hudson in Macon prior to the integration of schools.

SSU Starts Indoor Track Season

Savannah State began their 2014 indoor track season by participating in the Wake Forest Invitational on January 11. SSU had 11 top 10 finishes in the meet. Earning third were Cameron Hall (60m hurdles) and Jazy Seay-Blane (400m); finishing 4th were Asia Stinson (60m)n and Rajeanne Jarrett( triple jump); Jaymi White (long jump) and Kenshard Hamilton (200m) were 5th and 6th in their events; finishing 7th were Kortney Grey (long jump) and the men’s 4x400m relay team; Kris Ballou (800m) and Blane (200m) were 8th in their events while Derrick Akins was 10th in the weight throw.
