Another Honor For SSU’s Heyward

Savannah State senior wide receiver Simon Heyward has received another preseason honor. His latest is being named to the Phil Steele 2013 Preseason FCS All-MEAC Team. The Savannah native was named to the first team. The Beach High graduate caught 44 passes last season for 751 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Former SSU Coach Lands At UAPB

Former Savannah State assistant football coach Dwayne Curry was recently hired at Arkansas-Pine Bluff where he will coach the defensive line. Curry was the defensive line coach at SSU during the 2010 season. Before joining the UAPB staff, the Mississippi State grad spent a year coaching at West Alabama. After leaving SSU, he worked at Garden City Community College.

MEAC To Hold Football Press Luncheon

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference will host their annual Football Press Luncheon, Friday, July 26 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. MEAC head football coaches and two student-athletes from each team will be on hand to offer an inside view on the upcoming 2013 football season.

The 2013 MEAC football season kicks off on Thursday, August 29 featuring Hampton University in a non-conference match-up against Western Illinois.

SSU Football Coach Hires Staff

Savannah State head football coach Earnest Wilson III has put together his football staff for the upcoming season. SSU Alumni will be elated to know that for SSU player and coach Michael Wallace will be on the staff as inside linebacker coach. He will also coach the special teams. Wallace comes to SSU from Benedict where he coached the safeties. Willard Scissum, who comes to SSU from Alabama State, will serve as associate head coach/offensive line coach. Corey Barlow, a hold over from the previous staff, will be defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach. David Roberson, who also coached at SSU last season, will serve as outside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Mister Askew will be the running backs coach. Askew spent last season at Central State. Jonas Jackson, a former head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan will mentor the defensive line. Lawrence Livingston comes to SSU from Albany State and will coach the quarterbacks while Chris Buckner, who comes to SSU from Jackson State, will coach the wide receivers.
