Lady Tigers Lose In MEAC Tourney-

The Savannah State women’s basketball team was bounced from the MEAC tournament in Norfolk, VA on the first day after a 50-35 loss to South Carolina State on March 11.

SSU trailed by 9 points at the half but trimmed their deficit to 3 early in the second period. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs answered SSU rally with a 10-0 run that blew the game open. SSU got back within 8 but a 12-2 SCSU run gave the Bulldogs a 18 point lead with 5:25 left. Jasmine Norman had 13 points for SSU (7-23) who ended their seasonona8gamelosing streak.

Morgan State Beats SSU In Overtime

Justin Black scored 20 points, including the game winning 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to give Morgan State a 64-61 win over Savannah State in the quarterfinals of the MEAC tournament on March 15 played in Norfolk, VA. SSU fought back from a 10 point deficit in the second half to take the lead.

The Tigers led 55- 52 with less than a minute left but Black nailed a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Devin Williams led SSU with 20 points. Rashad Hassan added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Preston Blackman scored 10 points and Arnold Louis had 11 rebounds and 8 points.

In the opening round, SSU defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 59-44 on March 11. Williams poured in a career-high 26 points to lead the way. Blackman chipped in 12 points and Hassan added 10. The Tigers used second half runs of 11-2 and 13-5 to pull away.

SSU Play In CIT

The Savannah State men’s basketball team accepted an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. SSU was scheduled to plat at East Carolina on March 19 at 7pm. A win would give the Tigers (19- 14) their second consecutive 20-win season. ECU (18- 12) competes in Conference USA. It is the first meeting between the teams.

SSU Players Make All-MEAC

A trio of Savannah State basketball players have earned all conference honors. Preston Blackman and Rashad Hassan made the All-MEAC second team while Erin Hogue of the SSU women’s team made the All- MEAC third team. Blackman averages 11.9 points and 3.5 assists while Hassan averages 12.8 points and 5.8 rebounds. Hogue averaged 11.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
