SSU Women Fall To NCCU and Cookman
The Savannah State women’s basketball team traveled to Durham, North Carolina on March 2 and fell 33-29 to North Carolina Central.
The Lady Tigers led by as many as nine in the first half and led by six with 6:20 left in the second half. SSU only had one field goal in the last six minutes of action. With the score tied at 29, NCCU finished the game with a free throw and a 3-pointer from Chasidy Williams. SSU (7- 20, 2-12) was led by Jasmine Norman and Erin Hogue who had 10 points each. Hogue also had 15 rebounds. SSU lost to Bethune-Cookman on February 25 by a score of 67- 53.
Although both teams scored 34 points in the second half, Cookman led 33-19 at halftime. BCU led by as many as 21 in the second period before SSU closed their deficit to nine with 1:46 left. Norman had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Hogue added 12 points and nine rebounds.
SSU Men Lose To Cookman
Bethune-Cookman defeated Savannah State 72- 58 on February 25 despite going the final 5:29 of the game without a field goal. Cookman led by two at the half but used a 17-6 run in the second half to pull away from the Tigers.
SSU would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way. Rashad Hassan had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Tigers. Preston Blackman also had 14 point and Arnold Louis chipped in 10 points and nine boards. North Carolina Central downed SSU (17-12, 10-4) on March 2 by a score of 51-47 as the Eagles shot 52.6 percent from the field in the second half. SSU’s Khiry White hit a jumper with 4:46 left to tie the game at 40. SSU trailed by two with 21 seconds left but NCCU answered with four straight points and never looked back. Blackman had 13 points for the Tigers.
McGriff Joins Staff of New Orleans Saints
Former Savannah State player and coach Wesley McGriff recently joined the coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints. The Tifton, GA native previously worked at Ole Miss and before that was at Vanderbilt. McGriff will coach the defensive backs for the Saints.
The 45- year old McGriff got his coaching start at SSU and also served as the Tigers baseball coach where he won a SIAC championship. McGriff is married to the former Karen Butler of Thunderbolt, also a SSU graduate.
Benedict, CAU Win SIAC Tournament
The Benedict men and the Clark Atlanta women won their respective championships in the SIAC Basketball tournament played at Morehouse on March 2.
Benedict defeated Morehouse 68-60 as 6-10 center Marcus Goode had 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Clark Atlanta women defeated Benedict 75-48 as Conisha Hicks had 20 points, 7 assists and 5 steals.
