SSU Booster Club Trip To SSU/SC State Football Game

The Savannah State Community Booster Club will sponsor a road trip to Orangeburg, South Carolina to watch the Savannah State football team play their final game of the season on November 17 against South Carolina State. The cost of the trip is $45 (game ticket not included). The bus will leave the parking lot of the Savannah State new Student Union building at 10 am. The game will start at 1:30 pm. Sharpe To Enter Hall of Fame

Former Savannah State wide receiver Shannon Sharpe will be one of 11 individuals enshrined into the Black College Football Hall of Fame. The inductees will be honored February 16, 2013 at the Loews Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia at the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s Fourth Annual Enshrinement Ceremony. Others in the Class of 2013 are Elvin Bethea, Charles Brackins, Joe Gilliam Jr., Ken Houston, Charlie Joiner, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Larry Little, Jackie Slater, John “Big John” Merritt and Charlie Neal.

FVSU Makes Division II Playoffs

The Fort Valley State football team made the Division II playoffs. The Wildcats (8-3) will travel to Lenoir- Rhyne (8-2) for a first round game on Nov. 17. The winner will play Carson-Newman on Nov. 24. Miles College (8-2) also made the playoffs and will face West Alabama (8- 3) on Nov. 17 and the winner will play Valdosta State (8-2) the following weekend. Winston Salem State (11-0) has a first round bye but will play the winner of the Bloomsburg (10-1) vs. Shippensburg (10- 1) game on Nov. 24.

Savannah State Opens Basketball Season

The Savannah State women’s basketball team opened their new season with a 89-55 win over Columbia in Tiger Arena on November 9. Ezinne Kalu led 4 players in double figures with 25 points. Andrietta Thomas added 13 points while Blessing Uba and Jerryisha Williams came off the bench to score 10 points each. After the women’s game, the SSU men did not disappoint the crowd of 1,388 in Tiger Arena with a 84-62 rout of Trinity Baptist. Rashad Rassan scored 17 points followed by Stephen Wilson and Patrick Hendley who chipped in 10 points apiece. Jyles Smith grabbed 11 rebounds.

On Nov. 5, the SSU men welcomed old rival Fort Valley State to the campus for a exhibition contest. The Wildcats, coached by former SSU coach Sammy Jackson, left the city with a 79-54 setback. The crowd of 2,050 saw Preston Blackman score 18 points while Smith had 14 and 9 rebounds and Hassan scored 11.

Bethune-Cookman Surpases Savannah State 49-7

Quentin Williams ran for 113 yards and passed for 103 in leading 22nd ranked Bethune-Cookman to a victory over Savannah State in Wright Stadium that gave the Wildcats their 2nd MEAC title in 3 years. B-CU led 7-0 after the first quarter but exploded for 28 points in the second quarter for a 35-0 halftime advantage. The Tigers prevented a shutout in the third quarter when Cornel Weston recovered a Cookman (8-2) fumble in the endzone.

Reserve quarterback Brodrick Waters scored on a 3 yard run late in the third and ona8yardrunwithlessthan 3 minutes left in the game for the 42 point win. SSU (1-9) was led by Antonio Bostick who passed for 120 yards despite throwing 3 interceptions. Lereginald Veals ran for 51 yards and Dylan Cook caught 5 passes for 71 yards. Vaughn Cornelia had 14 tackles while Terrance Williams had 13 and Trevion Ashford had an interception. The Cookman defense limited the Tigers to 80 rushing yards and had 4 sacks.
