Tigers Hold Second Scrimmage

The Savannah State football team held their second preseason scrimmage on August 18. The offense won 10-0 but the defense was dominate, holding the offense to minus 49 yards rushing. Vic Hardison threw a 21 yard scoring pass to Angelo Cauley and Preston McCarthy kicked a 26 yard field goal to round out the scoring. While the running game was shut down, SSU’s trio of quarterbacks combined to throw for 306 yards and no interceptions. Hardison threw for 142 yards while Antonio Bostick passed for 83 yards and Leon Prunty passed for 81 yards.Quinton Boswell had four receptions for 77 yards. The defense, which had six sacks, was led by Brandon Jackson-Bell’s four tackles. Andrew Gardner added three sacks.

SSU Women Play In Canada

The Savannah State women’s basketball team traveled to Toronto, Canada in early August to play four exhibition games. SSU

opened the schedule with a 76-74 loss to the Toronto Vintage Club Team on Aug. 7. Erin Hogue led SSU with 24 points. The Lady Tigers played Team X on August 8 and suffered a 77-73 setback despite getting 28 points from Blessing Uba. SSU played a double-header on August 9, winning the afternoon contest against the Toronto A Game Junior team 43-36 and capping the tour with a victory over the Toronto a Game Senior team 77-53. Jerryshia Williams scored 12 points in the opener while Hogue had 22 in the final.

SSU Volleyball To

Start Season

The Savannah State volleyball season will begin on August 24 with the Lady Tigers participating in the UTA Hilton Invitational in Arlington, Texas. SSU will open the season against tournament host Texas Arlington on Aug. 24. On Aug. 25, SSU will play Stephen F. Austin in the morning and Texas Pan American in the afternoon. Savannah State will host the Tiger Invitational Aug. 31 thru September 2. Visiting teams include Kennesaw State, UNC Ashville, Southern Utah, New Mexico and Maryland Eastern Shore.

Tigers Opponents Ranked

The Savannah State football team will open the 2012 season against a pair of ranked opponents. Oklahoma State is ranked 19th in preseason polls among BCS schools while week two opponent Florida State is ranked 7th in the nation. OSU is the defending Big 12 champs while FSU expects to make a strong run at the ACC title this year.
