SSU Softball Sweeps NC A&T

The Savannah State softball team swept a weekend series from North Carolina A&T over the weekend at the SSU Softball Field to improve their record to 19-19 overall and 8-1 in the MEAC. SSU won 3-0 and 8-1 on April 14 and completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory on April 15. Madison Hedderly struck out 6 batters and India Morgan had a pair of doubles in the first game of the double-header while in the second game Morgan and Amber Hallman each had three hits and Chelsea Parrish drove in three runs. In the final game of the series, Katherine Stewart hit the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth to give SSU the win. Hallman hit a solo home run for SSU in the first inning. Hedderly struck out seven batters in the win. The Lady Tigers, who have now won six in a row and eight of their last nine, are in second place in the Southern Division of the MEAC softball standings behind Bethune-Cookman. Savannah State travels to Cookman for a weekend series on April 28 and 29.

Tigers Hold Orange & Blue Scrimmage

The Savannah State football team wrapped up their spring drills with the annual Orange & Blue scrimmage on April 14 at TA Wright Stadium. The offense out-scored the defense with a 12-0 victory. Vic Hardison tossed a 57 yard touchdown pass to Desmond Gantt and Antonio Bostick threw a 10 yard scoring pass to Cortez Noble to round out the scoring. The

45-play scrimmage produced 269 yards (159 passing/110 rushing) for the offense. Hardison passed for 77 yards and a touchdown while Bostick threw for 68 yards and a score and Hunter Vaughn completed one pass for 14 yards. Bostick was the leading rusher with 44 yards while Sheldon Barnes ran for 32 yards. Gantt had two catches for 70 yards and a touchdown and Demarcus Moses caught two passes for 34 yards. James Briscoe led the defense with five tackles, John Wilson had an interception and Javonte Miller recovered a fumble.

Howard Hired As Salem Basketball Coach

Savannah native Anita Howard has been hired as the new women’s basketball coach at Salem College located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Howard comes to Salem after working as associate head coach at St. Augustine’s during the 2011-12 season. Before that, she was an assistant at Shaw during the 2010-11 season. The Beach High grad was an assistant at Winston-Salem State during the 2006-07 season and served as an assistant at Savannah High in 2005-06 academic year. played at Fort Valley State for three years before finishing her career at Armstrong Atlantic State. Howard graduated from AASU Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor of arts in Fine Art and Design.

Ole Miss Releases Salary Info

Ole Miss recently released salary information regarding the coaches on the football staff. Included in the list was Wesley McGriff, the Rebels co-defensive coordinator. Mcgriff, a Savannah State grad as well as former Tiger player and coach, has a twoyear contract for $278,523. McGrif and others have buyouts written into their contracts. Each must pay the school $100,000 if they left for a similar position. There is no buyout if they leave for a sole coordinator title, head coaching job or pro football position. If each is terminated without cause before the end of their contracts, the school is required to pay the rest of the salary.

A&T Courts Broadnax

North Carolina A&T is in need of a men’s basketball coach and have set their sights on Savannah State’s Horace Broadnax. According to several sources in Greensboro, NC, Broadnax was among the finalists for the Aggies job. Others were Winston-Salem State head coach Bobby Collins and Mississippi Valley State head coach Sean Woods. Collins was on the A&T campus April 13 while Broadnax was reportedly on campus April 11.
