SSU Indoor Track Team Wins

The Savannah State indoor track team won two events at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational held in Gainesville, FL on January 14. Chaz Price won the men’s 200m race and Etchien Assinzo won the men’s 800m race. Earning second place finishes were Eric Plump (200m) and Ruben Isreal- McBee (5000m) while the 4x400m relay team finished third. Amber Hughes finished second in two events for the SSU women (long jump and triple jump). Amara Jones was second in the 400m race and the 4x400m relay team was third.

Tigers Win Three In A Row

The Savannah State men’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins last week to improve their record to 8-9. SSU defeated Morgan State 57-55 at home on January 9 and downed Florida A&M 69-58 on the road on Jan. 14. SSU trailed Morgan State by three with just over two minutes left but a 3-pointer by Preston Blackmon tied the game and Rashad Hassan had the game winning dunk with 1:12 left. Hassan led a trio of SSU players in double figures with 15 points. Blackmon added 12 points and eight assists while Deric Rudolph scored12 points, all in the second half. Arnold Louis had seven rebounds. The Tigers led FAMU by 17 points before the Rattlers got within nine late in the contest. Hassan had 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Tigers while Rudolph, who made five 3-pointers, finished with 16 points. Blackmon had 12 points and 7 assists while Louis came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Lady Tigers Defeat Morgan State

The Savannah State women’s basketball team earned their first MEAC win with a 69-60 victory over Morgan State on January 9 in Tiger Arena. SSU broke a 44-all tie with a 12-0 run in the second half. Ezinne Kalu had 27 points while Zadous Pollard added 24 points. Jasmine Kirkland had 14 rebounds and Alisha Nelson blocked six shots. SSU wasn’t as lucky on Jan. 14 after suffering a 55-50 setback on the road at Florida A&M. The Lady Tigers (6-10) rallied from a 10-point deficit and took a 49-48 lead with 3:22 left but could not pull out the win. Kalu scored 25 points while Nelson grabbed 12 rebounds.

Thomas Gets 500th Win

Thomson High School boys basketball coach Michael Thomas won his 500th game as his Bulldogs defeated Harlem 101-36 on January 10. Thomas, a 1980 Savannah State graduate, has been coaching since 1982. During his previous 29 seasons with the Bulldogs, the 51 year old Jenkins County native has won eight region championships and made two appearances in the final four of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.
