Appalachian State 41, Savannah State 6

Appalachian State’s defense held Savannah State (0-3) to 41 rushing yards and sacked the SSU quarterbacks six times in a 41-6 win over the Tigers before a crowd of 24,917 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The 3rd ranked Mountaineers (2-1) led 27-0 at the half before SSU’s Antonio Bostick scored their only touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run with 10:51 left in the game. The extra point was blocked. Bostick, who replaced a injured AJ DeFilippis in the second quarter finished the game with 136 yards passing and 37 yards rushing. Dylan Cook caught 7 passes for 47 yards while freshman Vaughn Corneila, a former wide receiver, had 11 tackles from his safety position.

Elon 23, North Carolina Central 22

Thomas Wilson passed for 416 yards and three touchdowns to lead Elon to a 23-22 win over North Carolina Central before 6,722 fans at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. Elon led 17-16 at the half and both teams scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter but failed to convert the extra points with NCCU being stopped on a run and Elon (2- 1) failing to complete a pass.

Central also missed a extra point attempt in the second quarter which would of tied the game at 17 with 3:44 on the clock. Elon made five turnovers but its defense held the Eagles (1-2) to 66 yards on the ground.

Clark Atlanta 16, Fort Valley State 11

Two big defensive stops by the Clark Atlanta defense held the Panthers defeat Fort Valley State 16-11 at Panther Stadium. CAU had a goal line stance in the third quarter and held the Wildcats offense in the fourth quarter at the 27 yard line. Special teams also played a big role as FVSU kicker Justin Rosenbaum hit a school record 57 yard field goal and CAU kicker Kemuel Lawrence hit a 42-yarder. FVSU falls to 0-3 while the Panthers , who led 13-9 at the half, improve to 2-1.

Griffin-Howard Joins St. Aug’s Staff

Savannah native Anita Griffin- Howard has joined the women’s basketball staff at St. Augustine’s College as the Falcons assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator. Griffin-Howard will work primarily with the guards and assist with defensive preparation. Prior to her arrival at St. Augustine’s, Griffin-Howard was an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Shaw. The Beach High grad has also worked at Winston-Salem State, North Carolina A&T and Savannah High. As a player she played at Fort Valley State and Armstrong Atlantic State.
