Heard Hired At Washington High

Former Savannah State football and baseball coach Maurice Heard was recently hired as the new head football coach at BT Washington High School in Tuskegee, Alabama. For the past year and a half, Heard was a athletic academic advisor at Alabama State. Heard was an assistant football coach at SSU from 1994-96 and won the 1996 SIAC title as the Tigers baseball coach. That same year he was named SIAC Coach of the Year. Heard earned his undergraduate in 1993 from Tuskegee and a graduate degree from Troy in 2008.

SSU Softball Assistant Leaves

Samantha Floyd, who served as an assistant softball coach at Savannah State during the 2011 season, has left the program to become a assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern. Before working at SSU, she spent the 2010 season as a graduate assistant at Armstrong Atlantic State. Floyd earned her undergraduate and master degrees from AASU.

Miller Transfers To AASU

The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball team announced their recruiting class in June. Among the four newcomers to the Pirates program was Aric Miller. The 6-3 guard joins the Pirates after spending the past two years at Bethune-Cookman. The Stone Mountain, Georgia native is the son of former Savannah State football standout Ernest Miller. Ernest’s former SSU schoolmates knew him as “Dirty Red” but wrestling fans may know him as “The Cat”. Ernest has retired from wresting and has appeared in a few movies and resides in Atlanta.

FAMU And UMES Picked To Win MEAC Volleyball

Florida A&M and Maryland-Eastern Shore were picked to win the southern and northern divisions for the 2011 MEAC volleyball season. Following FAMU in the south were South Carolina State, North Carolina Central, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T and Savannah State. Picked to finish second in the north was Delaware State followed by Howard, Norfolk State, Morgan State, Hampton and Coppin State.
