Former Teammates Witness Sharpe’s Enshrinement

Former Savannah State football standout Shannon Sharpe was among seven men enshrined into the NFL Hall of Fame on August, 6. Among those making the trip to Canton, Ohio were former teammates Richard Basil, Edwin Ford, Earl Bryant, Dwayne Ruff and Darryl McCormick. Sharpe played for SSU from 1986-89, played 14 years in the NFL and won three Super Bowl rings.

Hunter Gets Preseason Honor

Savannah State defensive back Darren Hunter was recently named to the preseason MEAC defensive second team. Hunter led the Tigers with 76 tackles last season. He also had one interception and two forced fumbles.

Casterlin Joins Staff At Norwich

Former Savannah State assistant football coach Barry Casterlin was recently hired as the defensive line coach at Norwich, located in Northfield, Vermont. Casterlin spent three years at SSU (2008-10) where he coached running backs, defensive line and defensive secondary. Casterlin’s other college coaching stops include Cheyney University and Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Albany State Picked To Win SIAC

The Albany State football team was picked to win the SIAC championship over Tuskegee according to the results announced at the SIAC Kickoff Luncheon held in Atlanta on July 27. The league will be divided into a East-West format this year. Albany State, the defending champion, was the top choice in the East. Fort Valley State was picked second, followed by Morehouse, Clark Atlanta and Benedict. Tuskegee was picked as the West favorite, followed by Miles, Kentucky State, Stillman and Lane. ASU was selected to beat Tuskegee in the championship game slated for November 12 in Columbus, GA.

Tigers To Scrimmage

The Savannah State football team will hold their first scrimmage of the preseason on August 13. The scrimmage will be held at Ambuc Park located at Sallie Mood Drive and will start at 9:45 a.m.
