SSU Recruits Get Jump On Academics

Fall classes at Savannah State do not begin until August but 22 incoming football players have gotten a jumpstart on their classmates by enrolling in summer school. Of the 22 players, defensive end David Adebiyi is the only upperclassmen, having transferred from Division III Muskingum. Others enrolled are defensive backs Edward Baety, Greg Brown, Spencer Haywood, Brandon Jackson- Bell, and Chris White; defensive linemen Leroy Cummings, Andrew Gardner, Jovanta Mobley and Brfandon Rhodes; linebackers Jamani Chavis, Justin Dixon, Fred Fluker, Isaiah Johnson and Jordan Mincy; wide receivers Kris Drummond, Merlon Jones and Vaughn Cornelia; quarterback Vic Hardison; running backs Chris Strong and Jon Harris and offensive lineman Robert Taylor.

Bethune-Cookman Fires Basketball Coach

On June 27, Bethune- Cookman parted ways with men’s basketball coach Clifford Reed. In a released statement from the school said the reason was made following a internal administrative review. Assistant head coach Graville Craig will take over the program effective immediately. In 10 seasons Reed put together a 125-166 record.

Grambling AD Resigns

Grambling athletic director J. Lin Dawson has resigned. Dawson had been AD at Grambling since November 2008. Grambling president Frank Pouge has appointed Aaron James as interim AD.

Shakir Inks Track Scholarship With SSU

Lemaar Shakir has signed a track scholarship with Savannah State. Shakir ran track at Westside High School in Macon, Georgia and holds the school record in the 110m and 300m hurdles. Sharik is also the first person at Westside to sign a track scholarship.
