SSU To Have Basketball Camp

The Savannah State men’s basketball individual skills camp will be held June 20-24 (Session I) and June 27-July 1 (Session II) from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Tiger Arena. The cost is $90 per session. Berry Joins Howard Coaching Staff

Howard head football coach Gary Harrell announced his coaching staff last week and among them was 1996 Savannah State alumnus Chennis Berry. The Atlanta native comes to Howard from North Carolina A&T where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the past five years. The former All-SIAC offensive lineman has also coached at Morgan State and Fort Valley State, Kentucky State and Morris Brown.

MEAC Schools Lose Scholarships

When the NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rates (APR) recently, several Mid- Eastern Athletic Schools were hit with penalties. Delaware State will lose nine football scholarships while North Carolina A&T will lose three. Both schools were also hit with new practice limitations. In basketball, Coppin State will lose four scholarships while Norfolk State is losing two. Those two schools, along with Morgan State, also face practice reductions.

FAMU Hires Basketball Coach

Florida A&M has hired Clemon Johnson as their new head men’s basketball coach. Johnson comes to FAMU from Alaska-Fairbanks where he spent the past four years as head coach where he had a 28-74 record. Johnson replaces Eugene Harris who was fired after a 46-80 record in four years. Johnson played for the Rattlers (1974-78), played in the NBA with four teams and was a member of the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers championship team. He also played five years in Italy.
